Manastirea Arnota

SCURTA ISTORIE
Usa bisericii, sculpturata in lemn de castan, are o inscriptie in slavona, in care se spune astfel: „Aceste usi le-a facut Constantin Brancoveanu vel-logafat”. Ele pastreaza pictura originala „dreasa” sub evlaviosul domn, cand s-a zugravit si pridvorul, pe care tot el il adaugase, pictura care n-a rezistat insa pana astazi. Pictura initiala are o mare valoare artistico – documentara.

SHORT HISTORY
Arnota Monastery is situated within Costesti village union, 56 km away from Rm Valcea and celebrates its feast day as “Archangels Saints Michael and Gabriel”. Arnota Monastery was built up in 1634 by Matei Basarab, at that time at beginning of his reign. As legend tells, before becoming King, Matei has escaped the hunting troops by hiding in some bushes of the very place. The diggings at the Holy Arnota Monastery, done under the patronizing of “National Monuments Institute”, in 1974, brought up evidence that under the foundation of today’s church there are the traces of other churches without initiation date that have existed here. The porch with the tower, were added by Constantin Brancoveanu, at the beginning of his reign, together with the repairs, between 1705 – 1706. Also by him are constructed the side decorations of the altar, taken in 1913 to The National Museum in Bucharest, due to its artistic value. On the church’s door, made out of chestnut wood, it is encrypted in Slavonic language: “This door is made by Constantin Brancoveanu, great noble”. The original painting “remade” under the reign of the holy king is preserved. At that time also the veranda that he added was decorated, its painting being preserved until now. The church of Arnota Monastery has a small body, having a simple and sober line. It was made by a tri-lobed plan, with polygonal obsidian and an open portico. A tall tower stands above the narthex, and another smaller one dating from Brancoveanu’s time, above the portico. By the help of an apparent brick cornice, the façade was divided in two ranges: the inner one, with beautifully rounded windows, and the outer one in which deep cuts have been made. The walls and the towers had been ornamented by apparent brick designs. The church was “renewed” between 1852 to 1856 by Prince Barbu Stirbei, who demolished the damaged hermitages dating back to Matei Basarab, and using a foreign architectural plan, constructed here other buildings. In 4934 hermitages that exist also today have been built. In one of these a small museum exhibiting the symbols of the Monastery was arranged. We ought to remind that in the pre-narthex of the present church there are two tombs: of Matei Basarb-died 9th of April 1654, buried first at Targoviste and then brought to Arnota, after the revolt of Seimenilor; and the tomb of Minster Danciu, father of Matei Basarab, brother of arms of Mihai the Valliant, died during Transylvania fights, led near by the side Turda Hero; his earthly remains were brought to Arnota in 1648. Repairs were done at Holy Monastery Arnota also in 1907 and 1935; by true believers and the Holy Episcopal House of Ramnic and Severin. Between 1954-1958, the Holy Episcopal House of Ramnic and Arges strengthened the buildings and is annexes, gifted it with heating system, water pump, etc. By its painting and sculpture work-of-arts Arnota Monastery is one of the most representatives monuments of history and fine religious art. Starting from 2003 at Arnota Monastery a series or renovations have been started; in order to build shelters for the pilgrims who come to the Holy Monastery from all corners of the world; to admire its unspoken beauty and to pray to Holy Trinity in God, to Virgin Mary and all the celestial Saints; for whom the Monastery prays to the forgiveness of their sins. That because at Arnota Monastery miracles take place, for those who come at the holy Settlement with true belief in their hearts; these miracles are world-wide famous.
